About rent vs buy .city
The reason this site exists, plus how it works.
For one city at a time, rent vs buy .city answers a single question: is renting or buying better here? Today's mortgage rate, the actual rent and home price and the costs owners forget all go into each city's answer, which we then stamp. At times, the stamp says buy.
The reason we built it
Parents, ads and friends who just bought tell renters that rent is "throwing money away." That line leaves out most of the costs of owning. Our goal was one place with both columns visible and the math open, so you can see it for your own city.
How it gets paid for
The site carries no ads, and no leads are sold. If we add links to renter products, such as renters insurance, they show up only after a rent verdict, and each one is marked as an affiliate link. How it all works is explained on the disclosure page. A link can't change a stamp, because we work out the verdict first.
